Jimmy Mizen was a 16-year old schoolboy from Lewisham, South East London. Jimmy lost his life in an unprovoked attack in a bakery in Lee. Our Year 10, 11, 12 & 13 students were fortunate enough to attend a special assembly led by Barry Mizen, Jimmy's father.
Barry talked about Jimmy's story and how he lost his life to youth violence the day after his 16th birthday, 100 metres from their family home. During the talk, Barry challenged widely held assumptions, asked some big questions about the kind of society we want to be, and explored why so many young people are losing their lives each year.
Students had the opportunity to ask questions, many of which explored the concept of forgiveness, peace and hope. We are lucky to have Barry visit our school and hope he returns to speak with other year groups next year. We will be holding a fundraising day to raise money for the 'For Jimmy' foundation.
