The Business Studies
Department aims to provide students with a wide suite of
options for them to choose as they plan their future
careers. The business function is a key part of any
organisation and it is our aim to equip students with
the skills they need to be successful.
At GCSE, we currently offer
Edexcel Business
Studies and the BTEC First Diploma in
Travel and Tourism. The former is a popular subject
as it teaches the students the elementary skills of
business such as marketing, finance, human resources and
production systems. An understanding of economic
variables is also promoted at this level. The latter
course is a vocational course which is targeted at
students who want to gain a practical experience of how
a specific industry functions. In this case the
promotion of the
UK
travel and tourism industry and issues such as customer
service and marketing are key for active participation
in these industries by the students in the future.
At AS/A2 Level we offer AQA
Business Studies and
Edexcel Economics. Business Studies
at this level gives the students extensive understanding
of the various specialist functions of the business
organisation. A key part of the course is the
manipulation of external data and its use in the
decision-making. Students will research a business
question at the end of their first year on a business
problem that they have identified. The idea is to
encourage analysis of issues in a theoretical manner and
devising practical solutions for it. Economics is a
social science which is focused on addressing the
concept of scarce resources in relation to the unlimited
needs and wants in society today. In the first year
fundamental micro-economic and macro-economic is
covered. The course also includes an examination of the
impact of externalities such as pollution and global
warming on economic models. In the second year, students
will analyse market structures as well as explore issues
in development economics. The main thrust of the course
though, is to ensure that students have the tools to
address issues pertaining to the
UK economy in order to
ensure that the country continues to achieve its
objectives.
