Music

KSHS says "thank you for the music"

Music is something that everyone can enjoy, and the King Solomon Music Department wants to build on that sense of enjoyment to provide skills and exciting experiences for all students. We believe in encouraging students to appreciate and participate in a wide range of different types of music.

At Key Stage 3, music is taught in accordance with the National Curriculum. Our schemes of work help students gain confidence in performing and in making up original pieces. Good listening and critical skills are developed alongside these activities.

The department has two well equipped classrooms, a dedicated music I.C.T room and several practice rooms. The instrument stock is of high quality, and there are a number of instruments of professional orchestral standard.

There are opportunities for music making outside timetabled lessons, and we have a choir, wind band and many small groups of players who write and play for pleasure. We have a number of specialist visitors who also run activities for extra curricular music. Students have performed in public concerts and in the Redbridge Show 2002.

Music is an option subject at GCSE and A Level, and we follow the course set out by the OCR Examining Board. Through these courses students develop a very good awareness of specific styles which span a wide range of cultures and periods in history, including pop music. The coursework tasks demand further sensitive performances and composition of materials of the students’ choice within wide parameters. Music is a successful subject and exam pass rates are very good.
