The Modern Language Department believes that languages hold a special status in education; that fluency in a foreign language and awareness of other cultures are some of the qualities of a well educated person. We believe that learning a language contributes to the whole improvement of the person, developing many important skills: listening, personal confidence and communication skills. Language learning is also an essential skill and one that increasingly calls for a commitment to lifelong learning. The most spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. This is followed by English and then Spanish. If you know English and Spanish you will be able to speak to more than half the population of the world.
