Homework Mini-Site

“No philosophers have arisen in the world like Balaam the son of Beor and Oenomaos of Gadara.  All the heathens assembled to the latter and said to him, ‘Tell us how we may successfully contend against the people of Israel.’

He answered, ‘Go to their synagogues and schools, and if you hear there the clamour of children rehearsing their lessons, you cannot prevail against them.”

(Gen. R. LXV.20)

Welcome to the section of our web site which deals with homework.

We believe in the importance of homework in helping students to achieve their potential, in helping them to become active, independent learners, and in promoting a love of learning, and we hope that the information on these pages will help parents, guardians, students and other interested parties:

·         to understand what our homework policies are

·         to know when they should expect homework to be set

·         to understand how to help students to achieve success in homework.

I hope that you find these pages useful.  We will be developing these pages over time – so you should check back for any updates.

Should you have any further queries about homework, please contact Mr. Sandeman (the assistant headteacher with responsibility for homework) preferably by email on ksandeman@kshsonline.com.

Homework policy

The school’s homework policy is available here

It is a Word document (194 kb).

Homework guide for parents

We have produced a guide (based on the US Department of Education publication “Helping Your Child With Homework”).  This is designed to help parents/guardians to get the best from the children on homework.

The guide is available here.  It is a Word document (141 kb).

Homework Timetables

The homework timetables specify when subjects should set homework, not when that homework is due to be handed in.  Subjects should not be setting homework for the next day, and the homework timetable has been constructed to avoid this.

Some subjects set longer homework over a number of weeks – in this case, the homework should average out to the weekly allocation.

The homework timetable is designed for staff to use – the nature of the timetable (the extensive use of setting) means that students are in a range of different groupings over the week and so the homework timetable uses the class names as presented on the school timetable.  Your child should be able to tell you which groups they are being taught in.
